Lecture objectives
Predictable endodontic treatment requires effectively reducing microbial populations within the anatomically complex root canal system. Current methods involve mechanical instrumentation, irrigation solutions, and antimicrobial medicaments.
Over the past two decades, sonic and ultrasonic activation techniques have enhanced the efficacy of irrigation solutions. More recently, the development of erbium wavelength lasers with advanced pulse technology, such as Fotona SWEEPS, have emerged as innovative tools to further activate irrigants and improve clinical outcomes.
In this lecture, Dr. David Barnard will provide an overview of current research into various irrigation techniques and share practical insights based on clinical experience to help practitioners integrate these technologies effectively into their endodontic practice.
Dr. David Barnard
Short bio
Dr. David Barnard is a distinguished Specialist Endodontist with over 25 years of experience in clinical practice, research, and education. After graduating with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from Sydney University in 1991, he completed a Master’s of Dental Science in Endodontics from Melbourne University in 1996 and has since been in full-time specialist practice in Castle Hill, Sydney. Dr. Barnard’s academic contributions include roles as a part-time Lecturer in Endodontics at Sydney University and Adjunct Associate Professor at Charles Sturt and La Trobe Universities. He has been a Visiting Dental Officer in Endodontics at the Westmead Centre for Oral Health since 2017. As a Fellow of the International College of Dentists and a Founding Fellow of the International Academy of Endodontics, Dr. Barnard is recognized for his commitment to advancing the field Since 1999, Dr. Barnard has been a regular presenter for the ADA NSW Centre for Professional Development, where he shares his expertise in modern endodontic technologies. In 2023, he completed a Master’s degree in Laser Dentistry at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Rome under the mentorship of Professor Giovanni Olivi, a global leader in laser-activated irrigation research. Dr. Barnard has been integrating laser technology into clinical practice to enhance treatment outcomes and expand the possibilities in endodontics.
